Reflection of double-glazed facades study

Double-glazed facades are widely installed in many new office buildings with large area of glazing facades. This product has some potential sustainable benefits. However, it also has some limitations.

One of benefits of double glazed facades is saving the energy demand of buildings. This facade uses natural heat ventilation principle to transit the heat from the inside. Moreover, double glazing can reduce the direct and diffuse radiation from the outside. However, there are some parameters that can have impact on the performance of the double-glazed facades. First and foremost, the floor of building, it is means that different floor has different impact on the temperature inside the facades. According to Elia’s (2017) CFD simulation, following the environmental temperature increasing and the floor level increasing, the temperature of the facades in the top floor increases dramatically. Therefore, how to alleviate this situation, another factor of the double-glazed facades character needs to be considered.

Isabel (2005) indicates that the glass character will influence the flow field between the two layers of glass. Selection of different glass can achieve reducing the extra heat gain and airflow organization in the channel (Isabel 2005). Nevertheless, following the different floor, the material of the glass needs somewhat change. Especially in the Mediterranean climates area which has huge solar gain and high temperature. Therefore, overheating and large cooling demand become a built environmental issue in this area (Silvana 2015). Hence, the location and geographical climate could have negative impact and different requirement on the double-glazed facades, which is not only a limitation but also a chance for developing and applying this product.

With my own view, in the near future, because of the benefits and relatively complex structure, some sensors could be installed in it, and take part in the building smart management and control system.
