Case Study of PARKROYAL on Pickering Hotel

PARKROYAL on Pickering Hotel is a green building with green mark certification in Singapore City, which earned BCA Green Mark Platinum Award (Awarded 2012) and Solar Pioneer Award (Awarded 2011). This hotel located in the Chinatown at the gateway to Singapore’s Central Business District.

The most unique feature is large of the area of tropical plants on the building’s balcony. Palm trees, flowering plants, shrubs and shady trees are planted outside the hotel. This green building method could absorb more carbon dioxide and decrease the heat radiation from the sun to cooling the indoor air automatically as a passive design. In addition, these plants also could form the light route naturally. Quoting the words form Lee Kin Seng, the hotel’s Director of Marketing Communications, “bring lush greenery into the guest rooms and internal spaces, enhancing the quality of life and reinforcing Singapore’s tropical image.” This design is both environmentally friendly and living demands.

In the architecture design area, Designer especially designed the bottom of the garden hotel, and the periphery of the hanging gardens, to create similar to the rock concrete module and terraces, as the originally vertical increase on the building of the ups and downs of strewn at random dynamic feeling. The whole external designed gives the audience a strong visual and impact feeling. More than that, the inside of the hotel used a large number of natural materials such as wood, pebbles to decorate and making interior decoration is consistent with the style of the hotel outside the body.

Other green building technologies and passive designs have been used in this building. First and foremost, using automatic sensing light function reduces the lighting energy consumption. Secondly, water collection and recycling system, which can collect the rainwater and use it for irrigating all tropic plants in this building. Moreover, the PV system has been widely used in this hotel for electricity collection. Bird cages, relaxing seats, artificial pools, artificial waterfalls and other landscape designs, not only greatly optimized the guests' living experience, but also became an air purification point and a pleasant view of the surrounding environment.

World Trade Centre Bahrain has an amazing design which is the wind turbines. The generator windmill has a rotor speed of 38 revolutions per minute at full load and is powered by a series of gearboxes placed in the engine compartment to run the generator at 1,500 revolutions per minute. The optimal power generation design is approximately 225 kW at a wind speed of 15-20 m/s. Moreover, the fan rotor has a diameter of 29 meters and is made of 50 layers of glass fibre.
